MRU takes four top slots in Rogue Valley Tourney!

MEDFORD – The Memorial Day weekend soccer tournament in Medford, Ore. has long lured Northern Humboldt soccer players to battle for the Rogue Valley Cup championships.  Six Mad River United teams joined 135 competitive soccer teams from California, Nevada, Oregon and Washington. Mad River teams brought home second place honors in the boys Under 13 and Under 12 divisions and placed third in boys U11 and U 10.

“Our boys did fantastic going up against all the big Western soccer teams like Reno, Eugene and Medford and beat or tied all of them until the last game,” said U13 Coach Duncan Robins of McKinleyville. “It’s a favorite tournament and I’m really proud of the team – particularly  since many of these players haven’t played together in almost a year and a half and they only had an opportunity to practice together four times before the tournament.”

The weekend’s wet weather and wind did nothing to damper the spirits of the Humboldt players. Under 12 Coach Heath Ford, also of McKinleyville, said that his team joined forces with Fortuna Coach Humberto Olea and several players from Fortuna’s Eel River U12 team and the alliance was a memorable experience for everyone involved.

Merging players and coaches from both leagues made a very high-powered team and we couldn't be happier with our success,” Ford said, reflecting on his team’s four wins. “Of the five games played, 24 goals found their way into the net, and only eight goals managed to sneak past our defense.”

Despite having more tournament points than the U 11 boys’ team that took first place at the Rogue Valley Cup, Coach Phil Rouse’s Mad River team took third with four wins.

“It was a first big tournament for all but two of the kids so it was nice that they did so well,” said U 10 Coach Tim Olson. He added that despite the fact that a tournament at this level can be intimidating, all of the kids got to play and were excited to return to that level of competition for the upcoming fall season.

MRU boys U 19 and U 16 teams also participated in the tournament.

The 2009 Redwood Classic Tournament saw two MRU teams take home silverware.  MRU Black U12B and MRU U12G won the gold and bronze medal respectively.

Later in the fall MRU U12G scored again taking home the silver medal at the Fort Bragg Spookfest Tournament (Pictured Above).

MRU U10G took home the biggest prize of the year winning the 2009 CYSA North Association Cup!

Current Mad River United U19B Piakai Henkel is taking an amazing step forward in his soccer career this coming August.

Recently Piakai was offered a spot in the world renowned Paris Saint-Germain Football Club (PSG) Youth Academy in Paris, France. This is a great opportunity for any soccer player, much less an American soccer player.

Congratulations to Piakai and good luck next year!

Mad River United U10G Win CYSA North Association Cup!

Mad River United U10G battled against San Francisco United in the championship game and won with a convincing 3-1 final score!

The CYSA North Association Cup is a tournament for all CYSA North teams and is very prestigious to win.  Prior to this victory, there has never been a champion from District 5.

The girls had previously faced the San Francisco team earlier in the tournament and lost 6-0. Bouncing back and working hard, the girls proved that in the end they were the better team!

Congratulations to the girls and the coaching staff for a job well done!

MRU Partners with North Coast Concussion Program at HSU!

MRU Director of Coaching, Sean Connors, is excited to announce a partnership with the North Coast Concussion Program...

"Concussions are a reality in today's sports world.  I suffered from countless concussions and they ended up ending my playing career earlier than planned.  All MRU Coaches are given information about concussions in hopes that they can be identified as accurately as possible.  Unfortunately this isn't always possible.  By partnering with the North Coast Concussion Program it will give all of our families the best possible way to identify concussions.  I strongly recommend that every player takes the time to take part in this very important testing process!"   ~ Sean Connors, MRU Director of Coaching

MRU Players can get tested until June 9th.  Many of our players took advantage of this great opportunity and we will continue to work on this partnership, and have another chance for players to be tested!
