How are teams formed?
Mad River United teams are formed based on the following:

Teams will be formed based on the Mad River Evaluation System and the MRU Committee. The Mad River Evaluation system is effective in determining which  soccer competition level each player should be playing at and how each player compares to one another.

Using the MR Evaluation provides coaches an objective score in which to select players for the team they are assigned.

The situation becomes more complex when more players in one age group qualify for a particular level of  competition  than the roster will allow.

Coach/team/teammate requests are not honored at MRU.

Generic Example: 23 players qualify for U12 Bronze-level soccer. Clearly this is not enough to form two teams, but too many for one team,  so the question is:

How is the final roster selected?

In this particular circumstance,  the coach hired to coach this group of players will hold a Final Team Formation Tryout. Relating back to the example above, the hired coach will have all 23 players to the Final Team Formation Tryout and select a team based on the MR Evaulation System Scores and their own observations.  The Final Team Formation Tryout does not consist of the same drills that are used during the MR Evaluation System; rather, each individual coach is given the freedom to choose the drills that they believe will aid them in picking a proper squad. In addition to skill and evaluation scores, coaches will be looking for positive attitude, commitment, determination, and coachability. Parents can help their players to have a better chance of making a final roster by encouraging those qualities.

If there are enough players to form two teams at one age level and at the same competition level, a coaches draft will be used to create the two teams. The Director of Coaching must be present to oversee and approve the final draft.  Also,  when appropriate,  age pure teams can be formed based on the recommendation of the MRU Committee.

Essentially, the MR Evaluation System is a way for Mad River United to objectively determine how many players are interested in playing soccer, what skills level they are, and what level different teams should be playing at. After determining this information, we can select coaches for particular teams and move forward with Final Team Formation Tryouts if necessary.

Based on the team formation policy above, parents can expect the following after tryouts are completed....
Some players will be "cut" from MRU soccer based on their tryout score. These players are encouraged to play in MRYSL's recreational program.

Some age groups will be invited to team formation tryouts based on the amount of players.

Other age groups will simply be divided into teams based on the tryout results.
